Due to some intermittent gauge operation and what seems to be the usual maintenance for an XJ-S of this vintage, I decided to clean up the contacts on my instrument cluster. Since I already had it out of the car, this is what I started with. In order to properly prop up the cluster for a front view, I used a half-eaten bag of Cooler Ranch Doritos.
The next step is the fun part. Take out all the screws. They are pozi-drive. I found a set of drivers from size 0 -3 in a kit at Advance Auto. Snap out all the bulb holders. Initially, I tend to group the screws by funtion in order to remeber where they came from. Handle the flexible circuit carefully and be sure to remove all the screws(1) that hold the black front facia onto the white instrument pod. Additionally, there are two white plastic retainers(2) for the flexible circuit that most be removed by separating the black and white halves of the cluster and compressing the retaining tabs from the other side.
After you get the screws out, you can carefully separate everything to get all these parts. Handle the gauges with care to avoud bending/damaging the indicator needles. I found an inherent defect from the factory in my tach. The sub-structure had been twisted, probably as a practical "rework" to make it fit. When I tightened one of the screws and re-installed, the tach needle hung up around 3200 RPM due to interference with the screw. I added an extra washer to regain clearance and all is well.
The clarity of this picture should explain all (I say this quite a bit, keep in mind that it is, in fact, not). This is the flexible circuit and barrel gauges laid out. All of the contact surfaces have been cleaned with my handy sanding pen. Handle all of these parts carefully as they are fragile.
Reinstalling the barrel gauges. Note that each one has two metal retaining clips(1) that must be carefully replaced. Slip with the wrong tool on these and you could be missing a needle on one of our gauges. I used a small, flat-bladed screwdriver to push them back down into place.
