| The first step in this mess is getting the heads off. Starting with the cam cover is a good idea and this is what you'll see inside. For the car gear, I was stripping the engine completely, so I just bent back the retaining tabs, unbolted it, and pushed it forward. | ![]() |

| Removing the cam journal was an unnecessary step at this point but there you have it. Each matching tappet and spacer was placed in it's own numbered bag. | ![]() |

| Some of you reading this have enjoyed this very activity. Notice I had Kirbert's head pullers made up because I'm too cheap to pay $400 for a two-use tool. I made 4 because I was worried about undue stress on the studs. These are constructed per the drawing in Kirbert's book with 3/8" x 7" long bolts. | ![]() |

| I'm happy to validate Kirbert's design and report that it works. 20 minutes later the head was sitting on the garage floor without a hammer or pry bar in sight. The second head was just as easy. Use the tool and quit debating the merits of pouring Coke on the head studs. | ![]() |
